This week was our first experience with HelloFresh.com. We chose the Veggie box and had 3 meals (vegetarian) for 2 people. I was very excited to try this service and I have to say that so far, I have been very happy. First, there is the convenience aspect. I just loved opening the box containing all the ingredients for the meal. Everything is of course pre measured for ultimate convenience. Even the garlic gloves are peeled! Secondly, there is the time factor. I love that all meals can prepared within 45 minutes to an hour. Knowing that I could relax and start cooking at 5 pm and still have my meal ready on time for dinner is a luxury. Thirdly, there is the price factor. This is a big one for me as I’ve been really wanting to reduce our food bills. I feel that this system would actually help me to keep a more reasonable budget. And lastly and maybe more importantly, there is the novelty factor. I just loved trying new dishes, tasting new flavors and even discovering new ingredients. For instance, this week, we tasted freekeh (a grain that tastes very much like finely ground beef) for the first time and found out that we really like it. So all in all, it was a very positive experience.
Saturday: For our first meal from HelloFresh.com, we chose Jamie’s Sicilian Spaghetti Alla Norma. I have to confess that when I saw the package containing the spaghetti, I didn’t feel it would be enough as we are huge pasta lovers in our family. So I did use a regular spaghetti package. Because we were ending up with more pasta, I felt we needed more tomato sauce so I substituted for a bigger can of tomatoes that I had at home. All in all, I think all these tweaks impacted the integrity of the original sauce. But again, it’s pasta and it’s Jamie Oliver so of course, it was still pretty good. But lesson learned. Don’t get your eyes bigger than your stomach (French saying).
Sunday: We had the leftover pasta. I guess a good thing came out of being greedy the night before.
Monday: For our second HelloFresh.com meal, we had the Mushroom and Caramelized Onion Shepherd’s Pie. There were several steps involved (preparing the mashed potatoes, baking the vegetables, making the gravy) but all in all, it took less than an hour to put everything together. The end result was very good.
Tuesday: For our last HelloFresh.com meal, we had Waad’s Tunisian Freekeh Stew. This was probably our favorite meal of all three. We never had freekeh before and we really liked it. The grain really gave the dish a nice texture. The flavor imparted by the Tunisian spice blend was out of this world.
Wednesday: Lunches this week were a bit rough. I usually rely on what’s leftover from our dinners and that usually takes care of our lunches but I didn’t have any leftovers from the Hello.Fresh.com meals. We had what I made for my daughter’s lunch: Pizza on a Naan, plus some arugula and black olives.
Preparing my own meal tonight got me to appreciate all the shortcuts offered by HelloFresh.com. So it was a bit of a struggle to get started. I made Moqueca, a Brazilian Fish Stew, cod simmered in coconut milk with peppers. Just ok.
Thursday: Italian cuisine at its best: Chicken Cacciatore, a hearty stew with chicken and vegetables in a tomato sauce. I didn’t have any peppers but it didn’t really matter. What I liked the best was probably the sauce (I guess because of the wine…) with the olives and capers. So good…
Friday: For lunch, we had an Avocado Tartine at Supeba Food +Bread. Just can’t get enough of that bread.
For dinner, I was planning on making a Tomato Soup but this will be for Saturday as I still had leftovers from the Chicken Cacciatore. I just added a green salad and some grilled bread and dinner was done!
Have a fun long week end everyone!
